Work has begun today on getting the floodlights working at the track. This should take about a week to complete and then once they are working we will be able to hold gates with them on. The club nights will still be on a tuesday and a thursday and we expect them to get quite busy as no other clubs around here can run gates on these dark nights. We look forward to seeing you down here.

The British champs

Last weekend saw the British champs take place at Broadway house Cheddar. There was a handfull of Redditch riders taking part. The club had some great results and managed to finish 22nd out of 51 clubs taking part. Hopefully next year with new riders and riders who not out injured should see Redditch move up to be one of the top clubs.

Saturday saw the cruiser riders racing with 3 Redditch riders taking part. Tim Drew was in the highly competetive 35-39 class and got through to quarter finals. In the 9 - 12 class Harley Taylor took part and the newly crowned world number 4 got through to another final and got a great 3rd place. The other rider was Michael Gough who was competing in the 40-44 class which is a very tough class. He had a great day and finished a brilliant 2nd place, giving him a hugh smile on his face for rest of the weekend.

On the sunday it was the turn of the 20" racers with Sean Bowditch and Darcie Taylor joining in the racing. Sean was racing his first national event and managed to get through to quarter finals. Michael Gough was racing for second day running and got through to semi finals before crashing out trying to get the 4th place needed to get to his second final of weekend. Darcie and Harley both got through to the finals in there classes. Harley got 4th place out of 34 riders so well done to him. In the 7-8 girls Darcie led her final out of the gate right up to last straight. She was passed on last straight and then the 2 riders crashed into each other about 10 metres from end, then all the riders behind also piled into them seeing a lot of carnage. After everyone picked themselves up Harley ended up coming in 7th, such a shame after being in front for most of race.

A great weekend was had by all and hopefully next year will see Premiers coming on stronger.

Gates and club night

Gate practice is on tonight from 6pm till dark for those who want some last minute practice for the brits. The track will be open this weekend from 12 as usual but there wont be any gates as most of us will be at the Brits. Next club session will be next tuesday.

We now have Redditch Premiers clothing for sale. We have hoodies, t shirts and long sleeve t shirts.
The hoodies are available in large at the moment but can take orders for other sizes.
T shirts are available in kids (5-6 year old) kids(10-11 year old), then adults m, l and xl.
The long sleeve red/white tops are only in large but can take orders for other sizes.
We are also getting some trucker hats soon, though they are not shown on pic.

Kelvins coaching day

A good turn out at the track yesterday for the coaching day. There was 13 youngsters of all levels happy to learn from Kelvin. The feedback was everyone enjoyed it and they looking forward to racing. There was a smaller turnout in the afternoon for the older riders but they still took on board everything that they were told. Hopefully we might be able to arrange another coaching day sometime soon.

Sorry its a bit of a late post ( Greg been on hols and i've been in hospital) but Kelvin will be at the track tomorrow doing his training sessions. The 10-12 session is for under 13 and 1 -3 is for 13 and over. Hopefully there will be good turnout to learn from the 2009 british champ.

Just watched this excellent video. It re-caps Shanaze Reade's amazing effort to become world number one again. It was produced by British Cycling and was filmed and edited by, the excellent, Corinne Walder. (If you've got HD on your computer it looks especially good.) Check it out. DARCIE IS NOW THE PROUD OWNER OF A WORLD NUMBER 3 PLATE, GOING 1 BETTER THAN SHE DID LAST YEAR. THIS IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT CONSIDERING 2 WEEKS AGO SHE WAS STILL IN A CAST ON HER BROKEN LEG.

HARLEY DIDNT QUITE MAKE IT ONTO THE PODIUM, BUT STILL MANAGED TO MAKE IT INTO THE A FINAL AND FINISHED WITH AN EXCELLENT 4TH PLACE.

Gate Practice

Gate practice, at the track last night attracted 20-30 'air hungry' riders who gave the track a real bashing. The rain held off and the wind dropped too; this allowed people to leave the ground without fear of sideways movement :-S The gate has been dampened slightly, making it quieter, (and hopefully less of a disturbance to our neighbours), it performed well under the watchful eye of club starter, Bri Thombs.

There were plenty of riders from RLS4X in attendance which was great. It's good to see 4X riders making good use of the facility, their bikes, equipped with front shocks and disc brakes seem to ride so smoothly over the terrain, or maybe that's just cause' they have good skills! Anyway a good time was had by all, thanks to those that made it happen and see you at the next session...this THURSDAY 22ND JULY - 6:30 - 8:30PM.

Finally, a reminder that, the next round of the Midlands region BMX season takes place at Harworth this Sunday...Good luck to all those that are travelling the distance to attend, (especially you Premiers!)

Brian Thombs - Rotherham Regional - July 2008

Until last year, Brian Thombs, (father of club chairman Benn) rode in the 45+ BMX racing catergory. Heart problems, and a series of life threatening operations, have meant that Brian, (who in his 50's), has been unable to continue riding....However the other night, Brian was spotted, sporting a helmet and gloves, sessioning the last straight of the new Redditch track! Brian is now the official starter for the club and took part in the inaugural opening weekend; he did a stirling job, ensuring things went smoothly and safely for all the riders involved....It's great to see him on a bike again, an inspiration to us all.

Club Membership Charges and Track Use Costs...

We now have a temporary agreement with our Council to open whilst we thrash out a permanent agreement. To start with we are running Club nights and gates every Tuesday from 6.30pm starting this coming Tuesday 20th July. It is likely that we will add a Saturday session and/or another week night session. As well as this, the track will be open on a regular basis for general use. I will update this thread with exactly when...times, dates etc.

The costs of all of the above is...

Daily session and Club session charges

Club nights/gates weekdays - £1.50 members and £3.00 non members

Club day/gates weekends - £2.00 members and £3.50 non members

General Use weekday - £1.50 members (day ticket) and £3.00 non members (day ticket)

General use weekend - £2.00 members (day ticket) and £3.50 non members (day ticket)

Dual day ticket for Track and Skatepark-(perfect for the summer holidays) - weekday and weekend, non members and members prices to be confirmed

The facility has ample parking right by the track, the track is in its own compound and will be staffed when open. It has changing rooms with Showers, Toilets, Lockers. Some safety equipment and bikes will be available for hire if required (limited amount), Floodlight gates will run in the Autumn and winter time, (Weather permitting).

Consent forms will need to be completed and signed, under 18's will need a parent to sign the form. These forms will be available from the facility or on our blog/website in the next week.

Well, what a weekend!! Our open day, on Saturday, proved to be a massive hit with everyone who turned up. The car park was full in an hour, meaning we had to use the overflow parking around the track! People were streaming into the compound eager to find a place to sit and watch the afternoon's riding unfold. There was a great feeling to the day. The sun was shining, (the wind was blowing) and ice creams were being consumed by the dozen. It brought back memories of previous meetings, at the old Redditch track, from over 25 years ago. There were lots of familiar faces from the past, most notably, David Duffield, the man responsible for putting BMX on the UK map. The Deputy Mayoress made a wonderful speech, highlighting the hard work Steve Rooke, Benn Thombs, Council officials and all the Premiers had put in. Nick Harworth, from British Cycling, was present and seemed happy with how the day progressed too.

The track soon became a steady stream of riders, circling around and around. It was great to see new novices and established riders making good use of the facility. Martin and Mark from the UCR/Finelines BMX team were making mincemeat of the jumps on the second straight, even in the high wind they were clearing everuthing with style, (an impressive spectacle) At one point, a young lad named Luke, fell and hurt himself pretty badly; first aid swooped in and threw all their technical knowledge at him to ease his discomfort. Paramedics were called and he was whisked away to A&E. He was a brave little boy and we were all frightened that he might done some real damage....(The good news, there though, is that Luke returned the next day unscathed and ready to go again!!)

Racing on Sunday went better than we could have hoped for. We had nearly 200 riders attend. Riders and spectators travelled great distances to be with us, (thank-you again!). Motos went without a hitch. Not too many fallers during racing and feedback was generally positive about the track. It was a sight to see the team tents and vans sitting in the club compound, it really felt like a top venue, a bona fide bmx bonanza! As I stood on the top of the steep start hill I looked over to the skatepark; it was buzzing with activty too...What a facility!

Rich Eames did a cracking job of commentating on the races and it was looking like we might all get home for a very early tea, until we had a couple of gate hitches, ie, we needed to actually plug the thing in to the mains :-S All soon sorted and the finals commenced. They were an exciting spectacle, concluding with the 17-24 riders putting on a superbly competitve show.

It couldn't have gone better. Thankyou to all involved.

REDDITCH BMX TRACK OPEN DAY AND REGIONAL DETAILS

Redditch BMX Track Open day Saturday 10th July 2010 2pm-6pm

This event has been organised to showcase the new track and facilities to the local Community. Final details haven’t been confirmed yet but expect the day to have a family feel. Local Radio Kingfisher FM will hopefully be attending. We will have a PA set up and maybe a couple of local bands playing.

We will have some exhibition races to show the local community what BMX racing is all about so we should have the gate running. This is a free event (meaning entrance and use of track is free).
Anyone wanting to ride the track will have to wear a helmet and long sleeve top and bottoms. Some safety equipment may be available for hire but this will be limited.

Accommodation
B&B’s and Hotels (Redditch does'nt really do campsites)
If people are wanting to travel and ride the track on the Saturday and stop overnight for the Regional the following day there won’t be any camping facilities track side for this event but here is a list of local B&B’s and Hotels. Google link to list of Hotels Most of these are within 5 minutes drive of the track.

The Closest Hotel to the track is the Campanile This is 3 minutes drive, from the track and from the Town Centre, and offers a discount if you are a member of a Sports federation like British Cycling.

Local Shops, Petrol Etc
-1 minute drive or 5 minute walk from the track is a Morrison’s Supermarket with Petrol station
-Overlooking the track is the Golden Goose Pub and Restaurant. This is open all day and serves food from lunchtime right through to the evening. It has a pub garden that backs on to the track with a small children’s play area. They have coverage of the World Cup. With the World Cup Final being on the same day as the Regional I thought I had better mention that :-). They do take reservations so If anyone is planning on eating there after racing it is worth booking earlier in the day.

-The town centre is 5 minutes drive from the track. There is an indoor shopping centre which opens from 10am till 4pm on Sundays. It has most of the top high Street stores, plus it has a multi screen Cinema on the top floor. Just in case some of the family fancy something different to watching the racing.

Car parking
There will be ample parking both in the car park by the track and on the field by the track. There will be no charge for parking. The management of the Golden Goose Pub next to the track have asked us if all BMXers can leave their car park for their patrons. So if you can respect this we would really appreciate that. As I said we have plenty of parking on race day that is 50 yards from the track this will be well signposted too.

There will be road signs to follow probably from Junction 2 and 3 of the M42 to the track.

Entrance Fee
As we are allowing free parking. There will be a £1 entrance fee for anyone over 12. For your pound you will get an event programme which will have a lucky number on it for the raffle which has already got some awesome prizes (see this page for updates on prizes over the next couple of weeks). As well as this there is the use of proper toilet facilities track side in our Clubhouse.

Music and Commentary
We have already hired a PA system for the weekend, so will have someone looking after the music on the Sunday. We have also booked the one and only Northern Monkey Rich Eames. He will come down on the Sunday to commentate on racing. For those of you that don’t know; Rich is one of the commentators at National Events, and has been for many years. We are chuffed to confirm his attendance and at a very reasonable rate too.

Pre-Registration
We will be doing pre-registration on Saturday 10th July – I will update this page with full details of times and pre-registration options in the next week.

Registration on day of Regional
We plan to start registration as early as possible, and this will close at 11.30am sharp, So Can we ask that people register as early as possible so we can get things moving. Anyone that is running late are advised to ring ahead to someone from their club to register you, as no one we be able to register after 11.30am

Murray Family Visits the Redditch Track

Last night, (and lucky for us, the longest day), the track was briefly opened, and the start gate made operational for one night. This was to demonstrate to local Redditch Councillors that their decision, to allow the track to be built, was a wise and fantastic one. The evening was well attended by people from near and far, young and old (all riders, wisely sporting helmets). Everyone was ripping up the track, enjoying the fantastic weather conditions. Among the visitors were special guests, Stay Strong Rider Gareth Bates, Martin Murray, (brother of Stephen Murray) and Mason and Seth Murray, Stephens sons, currently on holiday in the U.K. It was so good to see riders of their calibre using the track to its full potential. It bodes well for the future, (Regional, National and eventually European.) events that we eventually wish to cater for.

Premiers at Chezzy!

Redditch Premiers attended round 4 of the Midlands Regional series at Chesterfield. It was a beautiful day and the track was rolling smooth, especially down the, ultra fast, first straight. We had a whale of a time and all finished well, (and miraculously) without injury.

Redditch Track Vid...

Redditch Premier, Scott Beaumont, recently posted a video on youtube. The video, taken with a helmet cam, shows how smooth the 'Redditch Raceway' is! It's looks irresistable. Track will be open in a few weeks as it needs to settle down and we need to complete some essential paperwork before anyone can officially ride it. Hi Everyone,
Just some info about Redditch as there has been a few enquiries. Track opening - The track is pretty much done now. Went up today and the Floodlights are now all up and ready to go. The track is done bar a bit more watering and rolling/wackering. Biketrack.org are just finishing off the finish line area, pens, back of the start hill, and putting top soil down on the sides of jumps and backs of berm etc to generally just tidy the track up. They should be finished by the end of the week.

We havent got an official opening date yet. It is likely that we will need to sign the lease agreement with the Council and tie up a few more loose ends like insurance etc before we are able to open. So all I would say is we will be posting up on here and on our blog when we have an opening date so dont make the journey over until you get word from us coz i dont want it to be a wasted journey for anyone. We are working hard on this and we are dying to get it open for us all to enjoy so just bare with us.

Membership- Our membership form is done and ready to go live. This should be available to download off our blog in the next couple of days. Tim Print @ http://www.shooma.co.uk is reconstructing our site as we speak so all updates and membership will be on the blog. There is a link to the blog from www.redditchpremiers.co.uk (You can also register yourself at that web address for any updates.) All membership costs and details will be on the form and as soon as its live you can start sending them in.

Standard Junior Membership(under 18's) - £15 per year - and £2 per session

This is a facility with a difference. the facility is in its own compound. it includes a Clubhouse with Club room, kitchen, shower and toilet facilities, first aid room. The track is also floodlit. Dont forget that 150 yards from the track is a huge bmx orientated competition skatepark ( we had the French WE THE PEOPLE TEAM down there the other day). The track and skatepark facilities will be run side by side and we will offer day tickets so people can come for the day and ride both facilities at a very very reasonible reduced rate (tba)

We think that this is a facility like no other in the UK and is setting the bench mark for how all serious BMX track facilites should look, and run.We have to pay for all the running costs like water, electric, gas, insurance, track maintenance, and the biggest cost of all staffing. If we want the facility open all the time we have to staff it all the time, and as im sure you can imagine this isnt going to be cheap. We will look forward to welcoming you all to our new facility very very soon.

Thanks to club member, Matt Mayneord for the latest Redditch track photos. It appears to be coming on in 'leaps and bounds'. Apparently the berms should be receiving a layer of tarmac this week...let's hope the weather stays fine!!

Club Chairman Benn and club member Greg attended Day 3 of the British Cycling Level 2 Go Ride training this weekend, a successful day in the sunshine resulted in them both passing this aspect of the course. Both Benn and Greg are aiming to attend the Level 2 BMX Specific training course later in the year.

We have a general meeting tomorrow night, from 7:30 at Redditch Town Hall, your welcome to come along and join us:-)

The new track is being constructed by Bike Track who are Britain's leading specialist with over 20 years experience in the construction of BMX and MTB tracks and courses. Speaking with the Bike Track guys they are all very confident about completing the track on time. They exude an obvious passion about the project and the sport and they feel those who will use the track will be equally as zealous once they get on it for the first time. The track will consist of four straights with lots of jumps of varying degrees of difficulty and three berms. So far Bike Track have constructed the four metre start ramp complete with a gradual climb up for riders to access the start. From this point two full straights and two complete berms have been constructed. Currently under construction is the third berm, leaving the final two straights to be formed. The Bike Track guys were not giving too much away about the jumps remaining to be constructed but judging by the works so far it will be an exhilarating ride and thrilling for those who watch.

Speaking with Gary Lawrence of Lawfield Contracts Ltd., he said he was very pleased with the progress and most impressed with the construction so far. He added that Bike Track were on program to complete the works. The progress with the fit-out of the changing rooms and Redditch Premier's Club facilities were nearing completion with only minor works to be finished. This will be a much welcome building for those racing at the venue to enable them to change before and after competition.

Chatting with Benn Thombs, the Redditch Premiers Chairman he commented on the facilities and track as follows:
"So far the majority of the work that has been done is to the clubhouse. I had a look around this the other day and it definitely surpasses our expectations. The work has pretty much finished inside. It now consists of male and female showers and toilets, a first aid room, disabled toilet, bike store, an office, and a club-room with adjoining kitchen. There will also be locker facilities. The building has been designed perfectly for our needs and this is something that no other club in the country can boast. We feel that this should be the norm for our sport now. A more professional approach to BMX facilities is what we need to drag BMX racing into the 21st Century, and give it the status is deserves.

"Work on the track itself is starting to take shape. This is something we are keeping a close eye on, as we know that the track is what makes the facility and what will attract people to our facility. We are pleased with the size of the start hill; it's a four metre hill so bigger than most tracks in the UK. We have tried to make the first straight fast for everyone, but put some decent size jumps in it so it's still challenging for the elites. The first corner is looking big, which is what we wanted. On my last site visit the drainage was almost in and the Bike Track guys were close to starting the other 3 straights.

"Overall we are really happy with the way the build project has run so far. We have regular site meetings with BC, Redditch Borough Council, Bike Track and the main contractors. The whole process has been very professional, something we intend to carry through to when the facility is operational. "We look forwarding to seeing everyone down at Redditch from May onwards. We are working on one or two things behind the scenes which could be huge for the facility. So stay tuned for more updates."

With several weeks of track construction remaining one can sense the excitement of all those involved with the project and hopefully this will be reflected over the coming seasons with Regional, National and hopefully even European or International events. BMXing is certainly coming home to its British birth place and this much-needed venue will definitely be a long awaited boost to the sport within Redditch and for the British Cycling West Midlands region.

New Track - The Latest

Benn (Club Chairman) updated BMXTalk today with the following post:

Just been down to the site. Had a good chat with Jordan from Bike track. The first straight jumps have been built up from the mass material, and these have started to be shaped. They are now putting all the drainage in today before they have more material tipped to start putting the 2nd,3rd and 4th straight jumps in. I think things will more pretty quick now.

Hardcore and surfacing is a couple of weeks away yet, but the track is starting to take shape. Start hill is 4 metres at its peak, and 3.4 metres from the gate to the floor. I had a look around the Club house a couple of weeks ago. Looking really good. A decent size Club room, Kitchen, and a separate office which will have a viewing window looking out to the track. As well as all that, its had male and female showers and toilets put in, plus a bike store, and first aid room. All the fencing has been put in. This a 2.4m anti climb fencing similar to what Manchester track has and most schools seem to have now.

Things are shaping up nicely. Finish date should be end of April for the whole facility. Don't forget as well as the flood lit track we also have an awesome skate park on site too. So it will be an awesome place for a day trip if you are into race, dirt and park. I have some pics to post up later.

Track is Coming on Strong!!

On a number of occasions, whilst we've been out riding our bikes, sessioning someone else's track, (having travelled for a couple of hours to get to it!); we've discussed how ace it would be to be able to cycle to our own track. It was hard to believe that day would ever come...well it's going to be a reality soon. The bulldozers have moved in and, whilst the weather is good, they've been getting busy!! Take a look at these photos, taken on Sunday...can't imagine what it looks like today!

Midlands BMX AGM Minutes...

Midlands Region BMX held their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 27th January; the minutes of which can be found by clicking HERE. Couple of interesting points to note are the fact that the Redditch track build is scheduled to be completed by the 6th April. There will also be four more Midlands tracks appearing, later in the year: Stockingford,(Nuneaton), Birmingham, Tamworth and Wolverhampton; more time riding instead of driving!!!

Redditch Premiers Sunday Session

The club enjoyed an energetic morning at Bishops Tachbrook yesteday morning...it's a great way to get over a hangover, (wouldn't you agree Benn? ;-) and learn some new skills. Everyone is so encouraging, some people were improving visibly by the hour! Most of us are heading up to Bullwell, Nottingham for a winter club race, next weekend, feel free to come and join us...

Redditch Regional

Benn and Sean attended the Midlands Region BMX AGM last night in Derby. Among the topics of conversation were possible dates for a regional, to be held at Redditch, this year. It went down to the wire, with Nuneaton winning the toss, (they actually flipped a coin to decide this!) to stage the Midlands Championships in October. We'll hopefully be holding a race meeting in July. The 25th July clashes with the Worlds and Regionals being held elsewhere in the UK, so the date below is provisional only...watch this space for a final decision soon.

Redditch BMX Track - Latest!

Work has started!! Club Chairman, Benn Thombs reports that work has started on the new BMX facilities in Redditch. The track layout was agreed with contractors Bike Track last week and looks to be really exciting, (and challenging). We'll keep you posted and try, (if the contratctors will let us), to get some progress photos. As Benn says, 'Roll on the Spring!!'

On another subject, Benn and myself went to Swadlincote, Derbyshire at the weekend. We attended a, two day, British Cycling 'Go Ride' course. It was a really intense learning experience, but it was alot of fun; so were the people we met on the course. Once we have passed the course we will be able to offer introductory cycling lessons to young people, and those people who are inexperienced on a bike. In future, we will be able to offer BMX specific coaching to people, just need to get the track finished first;-)

Three of us went to Bishops Tachbrook pump track this AM, for a bit of a practice session; (I put a shovel in my boot just incase:-S) The street, where I live, in Worcester, was covered with black ice and made it tricky, even to get out of the house! As you can see from the pictures below, it looked pretty but there was a dusting of snow at the track. We gingerly rode the track, not wanting to have an accident this side of Christmas! It proved to be a laugh though and the track rode pretty well, except when negotiating the tarmac sections which could be really slippy....glad we made the effort but roll on the Spring!

Nottingham Outlaws Winter Race (Redditch Premiers make their mark!)

At the weekend, a few of us had planned to make the 2 hour drive south to Andover for round 2 of the South Winter Regional series. The prospect of another new track to ride again, coupled with the top day we'd already had at Gosport a few weeks ago at Round 1, promised a good day. Unfortunately, with all the rain we've been having of late, Andover had to make the hard decision midweek to cancel their event. We were all still determined to get out on our bikes though and remembered that Bulwell(Nottingham Outlaws BMX Club) Winter series round 2 was on. So ignoring the rain on Sunday morning, we sped up the M1 to Nottingham.

There was a healthy Premiers contingent who made the trip; 9 in all, which I'm sure is the most we have had travel to a race meeting since the Club was reformed back in 2006! 8 of us registered and found we were all pitted against each other in the, 28 rider strong, 30 years and over category. This was exactly what we all needed over the winter ; healthy competition with riders of a similar ability, but always with a fun element, we love the banter.

Among the 8 Premiers riders that registered to race, were the 'Over The Hill All Stars'. This, for most of the All stars, was their first ever race, (or first race back after many years). They thought they would make a special effort to dress for the occasion, (see below). Their newly printed kits reminded me of the famous Evil Knevil uniform, and blinded all in the Winter sunshine. They certainly attracted a lot of attention and must've been a devil to get clean when they got home!-S. Benn, Matt, Greg and Sean rounded up the Premiers in attendance. It wasn't just the Allstars that were making a long over due comeback either. It was also Sean's first go in about 20 years!! He has been itching to get his first race under his belt, and from what I saw of him motos, he was well up there down the first straight. He came away, feeling super chuffed having competed; and so he should, he did brilliantly. Finishing all his motos and winning his D Final - easily...Good on yer Sean!

Over the Hill All Stars, (and we're proud to say, Redditch Premiers), from left to right, Martin Carroll, Luke Clarke, Richard Newman, Jean McCoy.

The All Stars were mixing it up, and by the time the Motos were done it was time to find out who had done enough to fill the 16 places available in the Semis. After the points were totted up Jean and Rich found themselves in a 3 way run off, with the winner taking the final place in the Semis. Rich won it, wire to wire, but Jean pushed him all the way. This meant that 6 of the 8 Premiers were left standing in the Semi finals. Along with Rich, were Greg, Matt. Benn, Martin and Luke. The semis were super competitive with Greg and Benn taking 2nd and 3rd respectively in opposite semis. Matt held the 4th and final qualifying spot in Semi 1 before making a mistake on the final straight Rhythm section which allowed Chris Wilkins to pass him metres from the line, meaning elimination along with, Martin, Luke and Rich.

So that left the final. Benn in gate one, and Greg in gate three. This was Greg's first race back after injury, almost a year ago, and he did fantastic to take a very creditable 3rd place. After a bad gate Benn pulled some ground back down the first straight and was lying 6th before a crash in the last corner put an end to his race:-(

After racing was done, we all reflected on what a great day it had been. 28 riders in one category in a Club winter race, and over 100 riders in total at the race meeting which was a record for a Bulwell Winter Club race. Hopefully, see you all at the next one!!

IT'S ON!!!!!

Last night, the Redditch BMX track got the green light! Redditch council members voted, unanimously, to allow the build to go ahead. Lots of local people attended; it was good to see young people, not just present but, speaking in support of the plans. There were only a couple of objections; hopefully these people will come to see the project as a truly positive move for Redditch and ALL of it's residents. A special thanks goes out to Scott Beaumont, who made a heart felt plea for the track to be built...his 3 minute speech seemed to really swing the opinions of the council from a maybe, to a definitive YES!

Here's a note from club member Benn Thombs, written last night and posted, on BMXTALK:

Hi Everyone, Just got back from our planning hearing at Redditch Borough Council..... well actually, we have just got back from the pub after celerating the fact that we were granted permission to build the track!!!! . This includes the floodlights and perimeter fencing, Club house building the whole shooting match............. its all systems go I have just got to say a massive thank you to everyone who has had a hand in getting us to this stage. We have come a long way sibce our make shift 1st meeting 3 and a half years ago. Its been a long road with a hell of alot of work, buts it's certainly been well worth the wait.

I would just like to add a huge, huge, huge thanks to Steve Rooke. Some of you may know Steve as ex-editor of BMX Rider magazine or Founder of Redditch skatepark and Redditch Wheels project. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be looking forward to a brand spanking new track very very soon. Check us out in 2010!!!

PLANNING MEETING - 1ST DECEMBER

On 1st December we get an answer on our Planning application, for the new track. The planning hearing will take place at Redditch Town Hall at 7pm. We would like as many people as possible to attend. Please try and come along, even if we're spilling out into the corridor; it would be great to see as many Members, riders and families there as possible. We need to show the Planning committee, and the people that oppose our track, that the proposed facility could be a massive benefit to the local community.

An article, recently, published in Redditch Advertiser shows the strength of feeling, some people have, towards our plans. See below:

Residents say no to plans for BMX track at Arrow Valley Park (Tuesday 10th November 2009)

RESIDENTS have reacted with anger over proposed plans to build a new floodlit BMX track at Arrow Valley Park.

If plans go ahead the new track will be built on an area which at the moment comprises two football pitches and is regularly used by local residents for walks. The plans also include a perimeter fence around the site, a clubhouse facility, alterations to existing changing rooms, storage facilities, and a social activity space and office accommodation. Resident Heather Wood, who lives near the area, said: “Myself, and all my neighbours that I’ve spoken with, are all dead against this proposal. “It’s a real concern that yet another green space is going to be lost. “It’s going to be quite a big development. We will lose two football pitches that are always in use, not just for games but training, as well and a nature walk. “At the moment it is a very popular spot with a lovely view of uninterrupted greenery but if the proposal goes ahead we will lose all of it.” Redditch Council is behind the application, working in partnership with British Cycling, Redditch Premiers BMX Club and the Wheels Charity. Residents received a letter informing them of the plans at the end of last month and have until next week to object. Heather added: “At the moment everyone can make use of the area but if the track is built and a big fence is put up surrounding it then who can use it apart from the BMX riders? “We are going to fight this. If it goes ahead then who knows where the next place we could lose will be.” A council spokesman said: “The aim is to provide new and improved sports and recreation opportunities in the borough and to increase participation in physical activities across a broad range of age groups. “The on-site changing rooms will still be used for football and we can accommodate a football pitch elsewhere in the borough if it is required. “The track will be fenced off, but this will not prevent those who enjoy walking through the park being able to continue doing so.”

Bishops Tachbrook Play Track (Part 2‏)

After hearing great things about Bishops Tachbrook play track from some of the Premiers members; Myself, Sean, Mick, Andy and Ang thought we should check out the hype for ourselves . Myself and Sean set out early. When we arrived it was hard to believe such a great little track was tucked away in the corner of a park in the middle of a small village. The first straight is awesome fun with tight flowing rythym, this ment there was so many ways to get through it. At the end of the straight is a snaking tarmac berm which can get a little tight when you carry your momentum from the first straight, into it. Down the second straight you have more space between jumps but it doesnt flow as well as the first straight. Another great feature of this place is that the last corner,which is also tarmac, shoots you straight back up the start hill so you can literally do circuits of the track. We found it great for training by pumping round the track and seeing how many cuircuits we could do until we felt the burn. Mad manualler Mick Gough was rolling through half of the first straight on his back wheel, the guy has got mad skills. It was also great to see Sean really improving with his maunualling skills, it just showed what versatility this track has.

In summary we all loved this place, its great for beginners and experienced riders, because their is so many ways through it it gets the mind ticking with the different combinations, but its great for beginners to get the hang of manualling jumps and having more confidence in getting through Rythym sections.

Needless to say this will be a regular venue for Premiers Club session over the winter and we cant wait for our next visit. If you haven't already been, you should check this place out.....you won't be sorry you did.

Gosport Winter Regional - A Redditch Premiers Road Trip

As Greg had mentioned in a previous post, last Sunday, Matt Mayneord and myself, made the trip down to Gosport on the South coast for the 1st round of the South Region Winter series. Matt had to go down to the South Coast to drop a bike off and suggested we killed two birds with one stone and race the Regional. It was a track that neither of us had seen or ridden before and we had heard good things, so that was enough to make the decision for me; its always good to ride next tracks and spots.

The trip down was easy but the weather wasn't looking too great, it rained for most of our journey. When we eventually found the track, Practise was in full swing. The first thing we did was got out of the car to check out the track. It looked dry considering the rain the region had had, and with only 15 minutes of our 1st practise session left we hurried to get our bikes out of the van to get a couple of gates in and get a feel of the track. Luckily the South split up their practise into blocks, Under 13's and over 13's have 2 sessions before racing starts. This made sense from a safety point of view but also meant we weren't really queueing a long time for gate practise. This is defiantly something for us to consider for when the track in Redditch is built and we start to hold our own events.

The first corner at Gosport is a tight, right hand 90 degree tarmac turn and when you go 8 riders deep into it its a case of hold on tight and say a little prayer; especially when you're racing Masters/40 like myself and Matt were. There were 10 of us in our category, seven Masters( 30-39 year old) and three 40 and over riders. It was good to see that Miles 'the flying fox' Kirby, Mad Ady Warden, and Jai 'Redline/SE Racing Team Manager' Kemp had all made the trip down. All of us, mixed in with some local guys and South region riders, promised some close racing. Even with 5 in each moto the corners were proving tight and hard to make passes, I know this because my gates were that bad that I found myself at the back most of time and trying to pass people in corners. Matt however made rather lighter work of qualifying for the Final with 3,3,4 in his motos to qualify 5th and my 5,4,2 with a little bit of look saw me through in 7th place. Come final time and it was going to be between Jai, Ady and Miles. They had been swapping wins in the motos and were just a level of above where myself and Matt are right now. Miles took the win much to his delight, with Ady taking 2nd, Jai 4th, Matt 5th and Myself 6th. Over all the race meeting was brilliant. There were approx. 150 riders in attendance which was amazing considering the location and the weather they had had over the weekend. !

7+ payback was stacked to the rafters, Notable riders were Zoltan Buday (19+ National Champ, 19+ big hitters Billy Luckhurst(Profile and Hayes Hawks) and James Chadwick(Bournemouth) Jon Moore (40+ National Champ) Jon was on fire and really mixing it with these guys, I knew Jon was fast but to see him hanging with some fast young riders was awesome; watching the semis, I saw some good riders missing out on the A final. 40+ cruiser was busy too, with nearly enough riders for Semis. Gary Godden taking the win on his shiny new Redline with a move on the last straight.

We didn't waste too much time in loading the van up and getting on our way. With a 2 and a half our drive in front of us we wanted to get on the road. The event was run so well that racing was done by 3.15pm and we were away.

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone from Gosport Club and the South Region for a great day and we will definantly see you again over the winter.

Play Track Visit

As previously mentioned, some of the R.P. members went to Bishops Tachbrook, near Leamington Spa yesterday. We went to check out the new play track, (on the Bishops Tachbrook playing fields), designed and built by Jason Carpenter, from Dragon Downhill. It was a beautiful morning and the sight of the crisp edged jumps, after the 45 minute journey, was great. There was already one rider, Alec at the scene, from local club RLS4X, (we were later joined by a whole posse of riders from the club:-).

The first straight is a really tighlty packed rhythm section, finished off with a neat left hand berm. The berm then switches to the right and left again in a really tight, (and rather uncomfortable) way :-S . The berm then goes right again, leading into the second straight; this has some more triples before going onto three sets of doubles, of about a metre and a half in height.

It was alot of fun to ride. I particularly enjoyed the first straight and soon found myself triple manualling, in places, on every run,( a real achievement for me). However I did find it difficult to generate enough speed to jump all of the doubles on the second straight; Alec and my team mate Tim Drew, showed that it could be done though... The other RLS4X riders seemed to enjoy the track and it was great when everybody was on the track, snaking their way, over the obstacles in a train formation.

Overall, it was great fun to ride and it gave my knees a real workout. The parish councillors who made this happen were thrilled that so many people had turned up on it's inaugral weekend. Congratulations to all of them, the local kids are lucky to have such facilities on their door step. I'm sure a few more BMX's and MTB's will be on Santas list this year! Can't wait to go there again soon.

Club Activities this Weekend

Whilst Redditch Premiers, Benn and Matt, are going to Gosport, Portsmouth, for a winter regional this weekend; other members Jo, Greg, Shaun and Tim are hoping for good weather to allow us to go and ride the new play track at Bishops Tachbrook near Leamington Spa. From the looks of the photos below, it looks like we should be entertained for a few hours!-) It's been designed and built by Dragon Downhill, the builders of Derby and Tredegar so the build quality should be good, (but hopefully not too steep.)

Track Latest...Looking Good!

Hello Everyone....
We had a meeting tonight, (Wednesday, October 21) with British Cycling and Redditch Borough Council. Mainly to start completeing various applications and tidying up our business plan and all the boring, but neccessary stuff that goes with getting a facility built.

We also had a progress report.....Things are really progressing quickly now. The project managers have done an unbelieveable job and have submitted the planning application. We will get an answer on this in early December and if this gets passed, and the weather is kind through November and December(no rain please). Work can start on the construction of the track early January. This will mean that if the weather is friendly, we will be looking at a completion date of late April 2010. So lets just hope that nothing happens to disrupt this.

We got to see the site plans tonight, which really hits home to us how close we are to finishing this project now. The direction in which the track runs will be very different to how we originally planned, but it is how it best fits in the space we have, when also taking in to account important factors like - wind direction and space left between the track and perimeter fencing for spectator areas.

The other good news is that it looks like the changes to the Changing room building are going to happen. This will be adapted to make half of this brick building a Clubhouse that is purely for our use. The other half of the building will then be showers, toilets and changing rooms. Looking at the plans, the Clubhouse will include an office, first aid room, storage, and a kitchen area.

We havent had any news as of yet on who will build the track or on track design, but we do know that in the next couple of weeks this will go out to tender, giving British Cycling accredited track builders the chance to apply for the job. So watch this space.
